Near Bucktown and northwest of the Loop, Wicker Park was especially popular with the German and Swedish businessman after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. They built large mansions along the most desired streets, Hoyne and Pierce. Known as "the ethnic Gold Coast" at the end of the 19th century and Hoyne was known as "Beer Baron Row." Here many of the wealthiest beer brewers built their mansions here. With the completion of the West Side Elevated lines and the Polish immigrants moving to the area, the population grew. After World War II, many residents moved to less populated area.
