The Gold Coast of Chicago is the second wealthiest urban neighborhood in the United States. This prosperous neighborhood consists mostly of high-rise apartment buildings along Lake Shore Drive. Until 1885, the Gold Coast neighborhood was nothing special, until Potter Palmer built his mansion on Lake Shore Drive. Then gradually, over many years, the neighborhood became home to Chicago's elite.
Bounded in the north by North Avenue, on the south by Oak, the east by Lake Michigan, and the west by LaSalle, Gold Coast is home to the very famous Magnificent Mile on Michigan Avenue. Streeterville, just east of the Magnificent Mile, is a smaller neighborhood in the Gold Coast. You will also find the John Hancock Center and Water Tower Place here.
On January 30, 1978, The Gold Coast was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Gold Coast is also home to Chicago´s number one tourist attraction, Navy Pier, as well as, the Museum of Contemporary Arts.
